Columbia University announced Tuesday that it is shifting to hybrid learning for the remainder of the semester as anti-Israel protests continue to disrupt campus life.

An email sent by Associate Dean Matthew Patashnick to Columbia University families announces that all courses at the Morningside main campus will be hybrid, with the exception of arts and practice-based courses, for the remainder of the semester. The Medical Center and Manhattanville campuses will remain in-person. All faculty and staff who wish to work from home are able to do so, while those who want to attend class in-person can do so as well.

“Safety is our highest priority as we strive to support our students’ learning and all the required academic operations,” reads the email, obtained by National Review. Classes are scheduled to conclude on Monday, April 29, followed by final examinations. Commencement is scheduled for May 15.

On Monday, Columbia University president Minouche Shafik condemned the “intimidating and harassing behavior” that has occurred on the New York City campus over the past several days and announced that classes would be held remotely for the day.

“Antisemitic language, like any other language that is used to hurt and frighten people, is unacceptable and appropriate action will be taken,” Shafik said in a statement. She further suggested that “tensions have been exploited and amplified by individuals who are not affiliated with Columbia who have come to campus to pursue their own agendas.”

New York City police arrested 108 anti-Israel activists at Columbia University on Thursday after Shafik asked law enforcement to step in and break up the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment.”

On Monday, Columbia University leaders prevented professor Shai Davidai from entering campus and had de-activated his university-ID card. National Review previously reported that, in an email, Columbia chief operating officer Cas Holloway told Davidai that he had been barred from accessing the West Lawn, where protesters erected the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment.” Davidai had advertised a “peaceful sit in at Columbia’s declared ‘Liberation Zone’”on X that morning aimed at “paving a safe space for Jewish & Zionist students on campus & standing up against terrorism.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer released a statement about the anti-Israel protests at Columbia.

“College campuses must be places of learning and discussion,” Schumer said on Sunday. Every American has a right to protest, but when protests shift to antisemitism, verbal abuse, intimidation, or glorification of Oct. 7 violence against Jewish people, that crosses the line. Campuses must remain safe for all students.”

Republican Senators Tom Cotton and Josh Hawley have called for the National Guard.

“The nascent pogroms at Columbia have to stop TODAY, before our Jewish brethren sit for Passover Seder tonight,” Cotton wrote on X. “If Eric Adams won’t send the NYPD and Kathy Hochul won’t send the National Guard, Joe Biden has a duty to take charge and break up these mobs.”

“Eisenhower sent the 101st to Little Rock. It’s time for Biden to call out the National Guard at our universities to protect Jewish Americans,” Hawley said on X Monday.
