A CIA official has been charged with leaking classified U.S. documents about Israel’s potential plan to strike Iran in response to the Islamic Republic’s missile attack on the Jewish state last month.

Asif Rahman, who worked overseas for the clandestine agency, was indicted last week in federal court in Virginia on two counts of willful retention and transmission of national-defense information. He allegedly violated the Espionage Act, which bars the unlawful acquisition of defense-related information that could either harm the U.S. or aid a foreign country.

With his top security clearance, Rahman had access to sensitive information like many other CIA employees who handle classified materials.

Federal authorities arrested Rahman on Tuesday in Cambodia and brought him to federal court in Guam, a U.S. territory, the New York Times reported. The man is set to appear in court on Thursday.

The charges stem from the online circulation of highly classified documents showing the Israeli military’s intention to retaliate against Iran after Tehran launched a missile barrage on October 1. Israel responded with targeted airstrikes on October 25.

The leaked documents, which were prepared by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, detailed satellite imagery that revealed a possible Israeli strike on Iran. The leak occurred ahead of Israel’s retaliatory airstrikes.

The U.S. intelligence documents were only available to officials with proper clearance in the U.S. and the four other members of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, which includes Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the U.K.

A pro-Iranian Telegram account leaked the files last month. It was considered a major security breach of U.S. intelligence. The FBI opened an investigation into the leak, as the bureau is responsible for probing violations of the Espionage Act. U.S. officials previously said they were still looking for the original source of the leak.
