NextImg:Chuck Schumer Is Open to Renaming Gulf of Mexico if Trump Works on Lowering Costs

Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) on Wednesday expressed a willingness to help rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” as Donald Trump recently suggested, on one condition: the president-elect must work with Congress to lower costs for everyday Americans.

During a recent press conference at Mar-a-Lago, Trump floated the idea of changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico as he reiterated his vow to impose a 25 percent tariff on Mexico in exchange for the nation’s help to curb illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking at the southern border.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory, the Gulf of America — what a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday.

Speaking to the new GOP-controlled Senate less than two weeks ahead of Trump’s inauguration, Schumer called Trump’s suggestion one of his “strange, rather random ideas.”

“I’d work with Donald Trump on renaming the Gulf of Mexico, only if he first agrees to work with us on an actual plan to lower costs for Americans,” Schumer said. “That’s what the American people want us to focus on first, not on renaming bodies of water.”

The Democratic leader then took the opportunity to slam Trump, saying Democrats are more in touch with the economic concerns of the American people than he is.

“Donald Trump is in over his head. So he’s doing what he always does in times like this — distract America with crazy ideas.”

“Renaming the Gulf of Mexico,” Schumer said laughing, “may be a zany new idea, but it isn’t going to help people save money at the grocery store. It’s not going to make trips to the pharmacy more affordable. It’s not going to help anyone find a good-paying job.”

“Donald Trump says these things because it will get him attention and make him sound like a tough guy,” he added.

Following Trump’s remarks, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R., Ga.) announced she plans on introducing a bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America by Thursday morning. However, the legislation may not be necessary.

The process of renaming the geographical feature falls under the Department of the Interior, which oversees the Board on Geographic Names. Presuming former North Dakota governor Doug Burgum is confirmed as DOI secretary, he could expedite the process by requesting the name change.

The Gulf of Mexico is shared among Mexico, the U.S., and Cuba. No one nation completely owns the body of water.

Schumer called on Trump to come up with a real economic plan, “not a concept of a plan,” to lower prices before the president-elect “can have his fun.”

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum meanwhile poked fun at the prospect of the name change, saying the U.S. should be called “Mexican Americana” in return while pointing to a world map from 1607 that included American territory once controlled by Mexico.

“Why don’t we call it Mexican America? It sounds pretty, no?” Sheinbaum reportedly said on Wednesday.

On a more serious note, Sheinbaum rejected Trump’s proposition, saying the Gulf of Mexico’s name is internationally recognized by the United Nations and should remain as such.
