The president of CBS News announced Monday she is leaving the company as it navigates a feud with President Donald Trump and tensions with parent company Paramount.

Wendy McMahon is departing the network because of differences between her and the company on its direction, she told staff in a memo.

“It’s become clear that the company and I do not agree on the path forward,” McMahon wrote.

“It’s time for me to move on and for this organization to move forward with new leadership. I have spent the last few months shoring up our businesses and making sure the right leaders are in place; and I have no doubt they will continue to set the standard.”

CBS News is in talks with Trump to settle a $20 billion lawsuit accusing 60 Minutes of deceptively editing its marquee interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris, his 2024 election opponent, to help her campaign.

Shari Redstone, the controlling shareholder of Paramount, has expressed support for settling Trump’s unprecedented lawsuit. Bill Owens, the longtime producer of 60 Minutes, resigned from the network last month because he believed his journalistic independence was being infringed upon.

Trump has repeatedly called out CBS News for its election coverage and recently criticized the New York Times for calling his lawsuit against the network “baseless” in its reporting.

“In other words, 60 Minutes perpetrated a Giant FRAUD against the American People, the Federal Elections Commission, and the Federal Communications System,” Trump said on Truth Social last month.

“Despite all of the above, and Paramount’s/CBS’/60 Minutes’ admittance to this crime and, with other similar corrupt removals of answers to questions, the Failing New York Times, which is Fake News both in writing and polling, claims that ‘people’ said that the case is baseless.”

McMahon took over CBS News in August 2023 and oversaw numerous controversies during her brief time as head of the network. Redstone rebuked McMahon when CBS Mornings anchor Tony Dokoupil drew the ire of progressive staffers for lightly challenging author Ta-Nehisi Coates’s inflammatory claims about the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Dokoupil was subject to ritualistic humiliation internally for the Coates interview and eventually succumbed to the pressure with an emotional apology.

Former CBS News reporter Catherine Herridge has criticized the network for censoring her attempts to cover the Hunter Biden laptop story and squashing a live interview with billionaire Elon Musk. CBS laid off Herridge last year and she now runs an independent newsletter.

Paramount is also seeking approval from the Federal Communications Commission for its merger with Skydance Media, a blockbuster transaction the agency has spent months reviewing. The FCC and Paramount recently began discussions about the company’s diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, among other conditions for the FCC to allow the merger to take place.
