NextImg:Bob Menendez Pleads Not Guilty to Acting as Foreign Agent

In a growing list of legal troubles, U.S. senator Bob Menendez (D., N.J.) pleaded not guilty to his superseding indictment that alleged he acted as a foreign agent on behalf of the Egyptian government while in office.

Earlier this month, Menendez was charged with an additional criminal count regarding his alleged violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act from January 2018 through at least June 2022 while serving as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He previously stepped down from that role in the wake of the initial indictment last month.

His wife, Nadine Menendez, and business partner, Wael Hana, both of whom were implicated in the foreign-agent conspiracy charge, pleaded not guilty to the charge last week. The Democratic senator joined them in entering his latest not-guilty plea in federal court on Monday.

Menendez and his wife were initially hit with three federal corruption charges in September for allegedly taking bribes in an influence-peddling scheme that “provided sensitive U.S. Government information and took other steps that secretly aided the Government of Egypt,” the superseding indictment read. Three businessmen — Hana, Jose Uribe, and Fred Daibes — profited from their relationship with the sitting U.S. senator as a result.

Bob and Nadine Menendez were accused of pocketing over $100,000 worth of gold bars, nearly $500,000 in cash, a luxury car, and other bribes as part of their corruption scheme.

Menendez and the other four co-defendants all previously pleaded not guilty to the three initial charges late last month.

According to the superseding indictment, the couple and Hana were claimed to be in violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, which requires those who represent foreign interests to register with the Department of Justice and make periodic public disclosures about their business abroad. Registering under FARA as a senator is considered to be in breach of the Senate ethics code.

Despite the charges laid against him and Democratic calls for his resignation, Menendez continues to maintain his innocence.

“Anyone who knows my record, knows this latest charge is as outrageous as it is absurd,” he said following his most recent arraignment. “I have been, throughout my life, loyal to only one country — the United States of America, the land my family chose to live in democracy and freedom.”
