President Joe Biden signed into law on Wednesday a $95 billion foreign-aid package to support U.S. allies hours after the legislation easily passed the Senate.
Biden celebrated the bipartisan national-security package for providing crucial aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, while promoting American leadership on the world stage.
“It’s a good day for America, it’s a good day for Europe, and it’s a good day for world peace, for real, it’s consequential” Biden said Wednesday morning. “It gives vital support to America’s partners so they can defend themselves against threats to their sovereignty, and the lives and freedom of their citizens,” Biden asserted.
The president also lamented the Capitol Hill gridlock that prevented the legislation from passing for months, calling out Republican skeptics of Ukraine aid.
“For months, while MAGA Republicans were blocking aid, Ukraine has been running out of artillery shells and ammunition. Meanwhile, Putin’s friends keep giving him, keeping him well supplied,” Biden stated.
Biden said the U.S. will be sending equipment to Ukraine “in the next few hours,” including air-defense systems, artillery munitions, and armored vehicles. Biden also touted the positive effect the legislation will have on U.S. weapons manufacturers, which will be tasked with replenishing the expended aid.
The legislation will send roughly $60 billion in aid to Ukraine, with $23 billion being used to replenish U.S. weapons stockpiles and $11 billion to fund U.S. military operations in the surrounding area.
Israel will receive $26 billion including $4.4 billion to fund its Iron Dome and David’s Sling missile defenses. Over $9 billion of the Israel aid will go towards humanitarian relief.
