The BBC is coming under fire for scrubbing a recent story of Andrew Way, a convicted pedophile, to remove references to his past as a drag queen performer using the stage name Miss Gin.

The publicly-funded news outlet originally titled the story about Way, who was implicated in a sting operation orchestrated by pedophile hunters as: “Ex-drag queen caught in paedophile hunters’ sting operation.”

However, hours after the original post was published, the BBC removed any reference to Way’s “drag queen” past from the title. The revised article was instead relabeled: “Man caught in pedophile hunters’ sting operation.”

The piece further effaced of any mention of Way’s role in organizing local Pride events in Welshpool, Wales, and was simply appended with an editor’s note explaining that an “earlier version of this story made reference to details not reported in court and has been updated accordingly.”

Originally, the article also noted that Way “had also been organising the first-ever gay Pride event for Welshpool, Powys.” However, according to the Daily Mail, there was “no formal court request to remove references to Way’s occupation or links to the Pride event, which was cancelled in late June.”

“I think there should be some kind of explanation [from the BBC] as to why they are not saying who he is,” a county councilor from Welshpool told the Mail.

Way was caught pretending to be a twentysomething online, contacting underage boys and sending “highly sexualized” messages to decoy accounts sent up by the vigilante group over the social-media networks Snapchat and WhatsApp. The former drag racer already had a sexual harm prevention order imposed in 2007 restricting him from unsupervised contact with minors.

“These were serious and persistent and different breaches,” Judge Niclas Perry said following his ruling condemning Way for his “utter disregard.”

Way admitted to having attempted to contact a 14-year-old child and sending sexual communications to the fake minor’s profile.
