What Trump did on Day 1
ExplainerThe US president signed 26 executive orders, 12 memoranda and 4 proclamations on his first day in office, January 20, on immigration, justice or even the climate. These are a look into what his presidency will be like.
Donald Trump wasted no time on Day 1 of his second term. Having just been inaugurated on Monday, January 20, the new American president signed a series of directives at the Capitol, where the ceremony took place, at the Capital One Arena, where his supporters had gathered, and at the White House, where he will spend the next four years.
In total, the former Republican candidate signed 46 documents, listed on the White House website, including 26 executive orders, 12 memoranda and four proclamations – the difference between the three types of text is subtle – as well as four nomination announcements. This was a record. By way of comparison, Joe Biden signed 22 executive orders in his first week in office, in 2021, which was a record at the time.
