At age 73, Michel Barnier has just added another line to his already substantial CV. After being a member of both chambers of France's Parliament and of the European Parliament, a senator, four-time minister and European commissioner twice, this veteran of the right has been appointed prime minister by President Emmanuel Macron. Although he is often described as a consensus-builder, what exactly do we know about his political positions?
In this three-minute video, Le Monde explains the key moments of Barnier's career: his loyalty to the conservative Les Républicains (LR) party, his Gaullist positions (in reference to the legacy of World War II hero Charles de Gaulle), his commitment to the construction of the European Union and his interest in environmental issues. Finally, we take a closer look at the measures he mentioned in his candidacy for the 2021 LR primary, to become the party's presidential candidate.
