Donald Trump promised thousands of voters in Washington DC on Sunday, January 19 to "fix every single crisis facing our country," on the eve of his inauguration for a second term in the White House, during which he is expected to profoundly reshape major policies in the US.

The Republican president-elect told the crowd he would impose sweeping immigration restrictions on his first day in office – one of his key campaign promises. "By the time the sun sets tomorrow evening, the invasion of our borders will have come to a halt," he told his jubilant supporters.

Trump repeated that he will implement the largest deportation plan in US history, with the aim of deporting millions of immigrants. An operation on this scale could, however, take years to finalize and prove very costly.

He also promised to fight against "wokism" and diversity, equity and inclusion ("DEI") policies.

Trump will be sworn in on Monday at noon local time. Because of the bitter cold expected in Washington, part of the inauguration ceremony will not take place outdoors, as is customary, but will be relocated to the Capital One Arena. Some 25,000 law enforcement personnel will be deployed to provide security for the event.
