A major wildfire broke out on Tuesday, August 5, in the afternoon in the Corbières mountain range in the Aude prefecture in southern France, burning more than 11,100 hectares within a few hours. The blaze left 1 person dead and 9 injured, including 1 with severe burns. Another person remains missing. The A9 motorway, the main highway between France and Spain, was closed in both directions on Tuesday evening.
"Significant resources have been deployed," the prefecture said. Some 1,500 firefighters are fighting the blaze, supported by 9 Canadair aircraft, 5 Dash planes and 2 water-bombing helicopters.
Vacationers staying at the Lagrasse and Fabrezan campgrounds were evacuated as a precaution, as were around 30 houses in Tournissan, another village in the area, where at least one house was partially damaged by fire.
