Alexei Navalny, Russia's best-known anti-corruption campaigner, died aged 47 in his penal colony in the Russian Arctic. He was serving a 19-year prison sentence for extremism after he was arrested in January 2021, on his return to Russia from Germany where he had just recovered from being poisoned, which Navalny said was an assassination attempt the Kremlin was behind.

Navalny's death comes just a few weeks before Russia's presidential election. Vladimir Putin is running, unopposed, for re-election to a fifth term.
