Over four years after their return to power on August 15, 2021, the Taliban have transformed Afghanistan by establishing a regime based on fear and the rollback of human rights. Today, girls are banned from school, and women are excluded from public life, universities, healthcare settings, and recreational spaces. On September 30, they orchestrated a nationwide shutdown of the internet, further limiting girls' and women's access to education.
United Nations experts have described the Taliban as enforcing a "gender apartheid," while the international community has tried to strike a fragile balance between pragmatism and moral condemnation.
This repression has added to an alarming humanitarian crisis. Millions of Afghans suffer from malnutrition and have lost access to essential health services. The economic crisis has been exacerbated after some international aid destined for Afghanistan was suspended.
