American multinationals, just like their European counterparts, do not appreciate the trade war launched by the president of the United States, Donald Trump. The publication of their first-quarter results on Wednesday, April 23, was an opportunity for companies like Post-it manufacturer 3M, telecom operator AT&T and medical equipment specialist Boston Scientific to warn about the harmful consequences of this policy. Whether it's a recession, inflation or shortages, concerns are rising across the Atlantic. Yet, some dissenting voices are emerging. Are these the voices Trump listens to? Because certain US-based manufacturers dream of seeking protection under the shield wielded by the new "Captain America." Especially if the steel that forged it no longer comes from Canada, but from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

This is the case for Whirlpool. Marc Bitzer, the CEO of the refrigerator giant, welcomed on Wednesday the border taxes likely to eliminate the undue advantages enjoyed by his foreign competitors. "Since 2020, Asian producers have exploited 'loopholes'" in the customs barriers, creating a price gap of $70 (€62) per household appliance, to the detriment of American industrialists, argued the Michigan-based firm. It produces the majority of its washing machines and other refrigerators in the US, where it generates 80% of its revenue. Additional sales in the domestic market can thus compensate for a decline in its exports to Europe or Asia.
