Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney tried in vain to avoid any dramatic twists during the G7 summit held under his chairmanship in Kananaskis, Alberta. It was a lost cause. Against the rugged and wild backdrop of the Canadian Rockies, Donald Trump had other plans. The American president, against all expectations, left the meeting immediately after the Monday, June 16, dinner about international issues.

To justify his departure, the White House spokesperson cited the situation in the Middle East late in the afternoon, as the conflict between Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran continued to escalate. The White House scheduled a defense council meeting in Washington for Tuesday. "I have to be back as soon as I can," the American president explained, without giving any further details, during the "family photo" with his counterparts. In the evening, he denied that his withdrawal from the summit was related to "a 'ceasefire' between Iran and Israel" and targeted the French president specifically. "[Emmanuel Macron] has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much bigger than that," he wrote on his Truth Social network. "Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong," he added.
