Amid the general slaughter of Democratic policies, there's no reason to spare electric vehicles. As soon as he arrived in the White House, Donald Trump began dismantling measures put in place by his predecessor, Joe Biden, to support the clean car market and phase out combustion engine vehicles. This offensive is aimed directly at California, the pioneering state in the regulation of air pollution.
In an executive order signed on January 20 (Unleashing American Energy), the Republican president disavowed the goal set by his predecessor in the summer of 2021: bringing electric cars to account for half of all new cars sold in the US by 2030. Criticizing the "mandate" he said the Democrat had imposed on automakers, Trump promised Americans that "you’ll be able to buy the car of your choice."
The real estate billionaire also announced a freeze on funding for the charging station network, even though the funds had already been allocated by Congress. He announced that he was preparing to abolish the $7,500 (€7,195) federal tax credit for electric vehicle buyers. He also made no secret of his intention to revoke California's authority to set its own emissions and fuel consumption standards, a sign of the Golden State's importance in the fight against fossil fuels.
