Is former British prime minister Tony Blair preparing to once again play a leading role? According to the BBC, the Daily Telegraph, and several Israeli media outlets, his name has been mentioned as a potential head of a future interim authority tasked with overseeing the future of the Gaza Strip once a ceasefire with Israel has been reached. "Sir Tony wants to lead Gaza once the war between Israel and Hamas is over," the Daily Telegraph reported on Friday, September 26.
At 72, the former Labour leader has, for several months, been working on a development plan for Gaza with his consulting firm, the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI), and reportedly proposed to preside over a provisional government before power would be transferred to the Palestinian Authority.
The Briton, who spent a decade (1997 to 2007) at Downing Street, was invited to the White House for a meeting on Gaza with Donald Trump on August 27. He is said to have the support of several close associates of the American president, including his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and his current special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.
