For the first time since 1957, Le Monde is prevented from having a correspondent based in Moscow. After initially having had his press accreditation suspended four months ago, our journalist Benjamin Quénelle has just been notified by the Russian authorities of the cancelation of this document, which effectively prohibits him from exercising his profession as a correspondent in the Russian capital and throughout the country.
As indicated by the Russian Foreign Ministry in its exchanges with its French counterparts, this ban on working in the country is a retaliatory measure following Paris's refusal to issue press visas to alleged journalists from the daily Komsomolskaya Pravda, a newspaper reputed to be very close to the Kremlin. According to the French Foreign Ministry, the names put forward by Moscow were not those of journalists, but of agents of Russian intelligence services.
Le Monde condemns this covert expulsion of our journalist, who has spent more than 20 years in Russia without interruption, first working for French newspapers La Croix and Les Echos, before joining Le Monde. This arbitrary decision is yet another obstacle to freedom of information in a country where independent Russian journalists work in increasingly difficult conditions. As far as our title is concerned, this revocation of our right to practice our profession is unprecedented. Even in the most tense moments of the Cold War, Le Monde had continued its work in Moscow and elsewhere, carrying out investigations and reporting in order to tell and explain the reality and complexities of this country-continent.
We urge the Russian authorities to reverse this decision, which was based on factors that have nothing to do with our title. Furthermore, we assure our readers of our absolute determination to continue to follow, with Benjamin Quénelle and Le Monde's entire International department, the political, economic and societal news from Russia. It is more important than ever to bring it to light with reliable, in-depth and independent information.
Впервые с 1957 года газете Le Monde запрещено иметь собственного корреспондента в Москве. Наш журналист Бенжамен Кенель, после того как четыре месяца назад его журналистская аккредитация была приостановлена, теперь официально получил уведомление от российских властей об аннулировании этого документа. Фактически это полностью запрещает ему выполнять свои профессиональные обязанности не только в Москве, но и навсей территории страны.
Как заявило Министерство иностранных дел России во взаимодействии с французской ипломатией, этот запрет является ответной мерой на отказ Парижа выдать пресс-визу так называемым журналистам из газеты Комсомольская правда, известной своей близостью к Кремлю. По данным французского МИД (Quai d'Orsay), предложенные Москвой кандидатуры не были журналистами, а являлись агентами российских спецслужб.
Le Monde осуждает эту скрытую высылку нашего журналиста, который провёл в России более двадцати лет, сначала работая для газет La Croix и Les Echos, а затем присеодинившись к Le Monde. Это произвольное решение - очередное ограничение свободы прессы в стране, ге независимые российские журналисты сталкиваются с всё более тяжёлыми условиями работы.
