A man suspected of killing a student outside Paris in September before his arrest in Switzerland has agreed to be extradited to France, his lawyer said on Tuesday, October 29.
The murder of the 19-year-old, known only as Philippine, shocked France and prompted calls for further toughening of deportation and migrant detention laws. Philippine's body was found in the Bois de Boulogne park, west of Paris, on September 21.
Suspect Taha O., a 22-year-old Moroccan national, was subject to a deportation order to leave France, and had been released from a detention center in June this year, after serving a sentence for rape. Following his release, he failed to report to a hotel where he was ordered to stay while awaiting deportation to Morocco, and was added to a list of wanted persons on the day before the murder.
"My client has decided to accept extradition (...) to have his say on the case," his lawyer Florence Yersin told French news channel BFMTV. It would be "several days" before he was moved, she added.
Taha O., the main suspect, was arrested at Geneva's main train station three days later, with French authorities filing an extradition request on October 9. He initially refused to be sent back over the border.
"In the intervening time, I was able to discuss the extradition terms with my client," Yersin said. Taha O. "made his decision after understanding the ins and outs of the extradition procedure (...) it's an informed choice on his part," she added.
