TOPSHOT - An aerial image taken on August 10, 2023 shows destroyed homes and buildings burned to the ground in the historic Lahaina in the aftermath of wildfires in western Maui in Lahaina, Hawaii. At least 36 people have died after a fast-moving wildfire turned Lahaina to ashes, officials said August 9, 2023 as visitors asked to leave the island of Maui found themselves stranded at the airport. The fires began burning early August 8, scorching thousands of acres and putting homes, businesses and 35,000 lives at risk on Maui, the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said in a statement. At least 96 people have died in the wildfires that have ravaged Maui, an island in the Hawaiian archipelago, according to a new death toll announced by the authorities on Sunday, August 13. "We're are prepared for many tragic stories," Governor Josh Green told CBS Mornings. He said that search teams "will find 10 to 20 people per day, probably, until they finish...(it's) probably going to take 10 days."

On Tuesday, August 8, the fire destroyed almost every building in the centuries-old town of Lahaina. The fire was just 85% contained in the neighborhood, and 60% contained inland.

By Saturday, rescue teams had covered only 3% of the search area. Twenty dogs and dozens of people made their way through the burned-out neighborhoods, searching for the dead in charred cars and homes. It's already been declared the deadliest wildfire in the US in over a century.worshippers
