Our selection of events featuring rock, jazz and various types of music includes The House of Love on a short tour, the 40th anniversary of jazz fusion band Sixun in Paris and a tribute to guitarist Christian Escoudé. Additionally, there are three festivals: one in Rennes and surrounding towns, another in Vannes and the third in Marseille.
In 2023, British rock band The House of Love finally returned to France after an 18-year absence for a memorable reunion. Known for their pioneering shoegaze guitars and melancholy melodies, the band, led by the composed singer-guitarist Guy Chadwick, rose to prominence in the late 1980s alongside The Pixies and The Stone Roses. Since then, the band has undergone a number of changes, with an entirely new line-up following the release of A State of Grace (2022), but Chadwick remains at the helm.
After playing in Amiens and Marseille in September, The House of Love is back in France for four dates from October 1 to 4, in Toulouse, Clermont-Ferrand, Rennes and Paris. This tour focuses on the 1990-1993 period, with albums released by Fontana Records and recently reissued on vinyl. It's an opportunity to revisit classics from the Butterfly album (1990), such as "Shine On," "The Beatles and the Stones," "Feel," "Girl With the Loneliest Eyes" and "I Don't Know Why I Love You." The House of Love on tour: at Rex de Toulouse, October 1, €28; at Coopérative de Mai, in Clermont-Ferrand, October 2, €24; at L'Antipode, in Rennes, October 3, €30; at Trabendo, in Paris, October 4, €38.50.
Fiesta des Suds, one of Marseille's best-attended musical events, is now in its 33rd year. It's a mix of styles, and therefore of audiences, with a unifying line-up, including Meryl, Olivia Ruiz, MC Solaar, Flavia Coelho, Maya Kamaty, Fatoumata Diawara and Orange Blossom.
There's something for almost every taste. Headliners include Danakil, Zoufris Maracas, Ayo and Seun Kuti, some of whom present their new albums. In store are three nights of intense grooves (and decibels), plus an after-party on Saturday for those who don't want to sleep and a family event on Sunday (with Angélique Kidjo surrounded by kids – a special creation for "La Cité des Minots").
Few surprises, but a few lesser-known names on the rise or worthy of attention: soul-pop duo King Krab (Lucas and Adam Derrez), Benzine (Farid Belayat, Samir Mohellebi) and his electro-raï, French-Chilean MC Ana Tijoux and Brazilian musician Diogo Strausz. New this year is a round table at the Auditorium du Mucem, on Friday, October 11 (5 pm), entitled "Femmes des Suds et Engagements à Cœur," with Olivia Ruiz, Ana Tijoux and Flavia Coelho (moderated by Anne Berthod, Télérama).
