Several people were stabbed on Thursday, April 24, at the private high school Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides in the western French city of Nantes, located in the Brittany region. According to a police source, who spoke to Le Monde, one high school student died and three other individuals were injured.
The incident took place around 12:30 pm. The alleged perpetrator was a student, who, for unknown reasons, entered two classrooms and attacked the victims there, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP). He was apprehended after having been subdued by the school's teaching staff, according to AFP. His name was not already present in the judicial record system, the police source told Le Monde. No information was provided about the victims' ages or genders.
Education Minister Elisabeth Borne reacted to the incident via a post on X: "I am heading to the site with [Interior Minister] Bruno Retailleau." She wrote that, while there, she planned to "express all her solidarity with the victims and her support for the educational community."
In recent months, a spate of tragedies involving knife-wielding teenagers have occurred in and around schools, prompting the government to take action. Borne has announced her intention to reinforce the rules concerning students who are found to be in possession of knives on school premises. In the future, such cases will be systematically referred to a disciplinary board.
