On August 19 and 20, the European Space Agency's (ESA) Juice probe successfully flew over the Moon and Earth. This was the first time a space mission had attempted to benefit from a double gravity assist. Juice first grazed our satellite at a distance of less than 800 kilometers, during which the spacecraft's camera took this selfie.

The probe took advantage of the Moon's mass to accelerate slightly and be deflected toward the Earth, then, passing within 7,000 kilometers of our planet, made a 100-degree turn to head for its next rendezvous, Venus. According to ESA, this double gravity assist saved between 100 and 150 kilos of fuel.

After Venus, Juice will have two more accelerated rendezvous with Earth before finally heading for Jupiter, which it is due to reach in 2031. The mission's goal is to study the habitability of Jupiter's three large, icy moons: Ganymede, Callisto and Europa.
