The Trump administration has shown no intention of silently watching as the German election takes place. First through Elon Musk, a close adviser to US President Donald Trump, who, with the help of his social media platform, X, has been providing regular support to the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party and its candidate for the chancellorship Alice Weidel, since December 20, 2024. Now, via US Vice President JD Vance, in a speech that implicitly favored the party, which has polled as second-ranked in voting intentions ahead of the February 23 elections.

During his speech at the Munich Security Conference, the vice president called on European leaders to work with the far right. "Democracy rests on the sacred principle that the voice of the people matters. There is no room for firewalls," he warned, using the term for the German political taboo against associating with the far right, in a speech at the Munich Security Conference on Friday, February 14. He added: "You either accept the principle or you don't." Weidel immediately hailed, on X, the "excellent speech."
