NewsScroll through our maps to see how the fighting has evolved from Hamas's attack on October 7 to Israel's ongoing encirclement of Gaza City.
On October 7, Hamas militants broke through the Gaza–Israel border and killed over 1,400 people, according to Israel's official count. The Israeli Defense Forces were quick to retaliate, launching constant bombardments on the Gaza Strip, where over 10,000 people have been killed, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Those killed in Gaza have been mainly civilians, including some 4,324 children, according to the health ministry.
Israel first recaptured all its territory. It wasn't long before it announced it would launch a ground offensive in Gaza. After a campaign of intense bombardment on the Gaza Strip, on the evening of October 27, the IDF launched its large-scale ground assault, encircling Gaza City in the north of the Strip.
