The head of the United Nations refugee agency arrived in Lebanon on Saturday, October 5, on a "solidarity" visit for those affected by Israeli bombardment, decrying a "terrible crisis" that requires international support.
UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi said on social network X that "Lebanon faces a terrible crisis" as "hundreds of thousands of people are left destitute or displaced by Israeli air strikes", adding: "I have come here in solidarity with those affected, to support the humanitarian effort and to ask for more international help."
Israel expanded its bombardment in Lebanon on Saturday, hitting Beirut’s southern suburbs with 12 airstrikes and striking a Palestinian refugee camp deep in northern Lebanon for the first time.
Said Atallah, one of the leaders of the armed wing of Hamas, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, was killed on Friday night in an Israeli raid in northern Lebanon, in the Tripoli region, the Israeli army said. "He carried out attacks against Israeli targets and worked to recruit operatives into the ranks of the Hamas terrorist organization in Lebanon," it continued.
The announcement confirms reports by media affiliated with the Palestinian movement, citing Hamas, that an Israeli raid on the Beddawi refugee camp near the northern city of Triplo killed an official within Hamas's military wing and three members of his family.
Across Lebanon, an intensified wave of strikes on Hezbollah strongholds killed more than 1,110 people since September 23, according to the health ministry.
The state-run National News Agency said that about a dozen strikes hit the Lebanese capital's southern suburbs overnight, with a fresh raid on Saturday around noon. It also reported more Israeli strikes in Lebanon's south and east.
