Pakistan and India have agreed to a "ceasefire with immediate effect" Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said on Saturday, May 10. "Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!," Dar said on X. Indian foreign secretary Vikram Misri said both sides would "stop all firing and military action on land, air and sea" with effect from 5 pm.
US President Donald Trump had earlier announced a ceasefire agreement between the two countries after days of deadly jet fighter, missile, drone and artillery attacks. "After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE," Trump said on Truth Social, praising the two countries for "using Common Sense and Great Intelligence."
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the agreement follows extensive negotiations by him and US Vice President JD Vance with Indian and Pakistani prime ministers, Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, as well as other top officials. "I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site," Rubio wrote on X. "We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace," he added.
An Indian government source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Agence France-Presse that India and Pakistan worked out the ceasefire bilaterally: "The stoppage of firing and military action between India and Pakistan was worked out directly between the two countries," they said.
The announcement comes after Pakistan launched counterattacks against India Saturday after three of its air bases were struck overnight and the conflict between the nuclear powers escalated to dangerous levels.
Pakistan reopened its airspace following a ceasefire agreement, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) said.
