Letter from Buenos Aires
First, there was the horror of the triple femicide, reported in detail by the Argentine press. Then came a wave of questions. Morena Verdi and Brenda del Castillo, two 20-year-old cousins, and their friend Lara Gutierrez, 15, were last seen on the evening of Friday, September 19. Invited to a party, they willingly got into a vehicle in the suburbs of Buenos Aires.
The next day, their friends and relatives grew concerned about their absence and raised the alarm. Where were Brenda, Lara, and Morena? The search continued until, on Wednesday, September 24, their bodies were found buried in the garden of a house in Florencio Varela, a city near the capital. According to the press, autopsies showed that the three victims had been tortured.
The outburst of violence was reportedly broadcast live "on social media and 45 people viewed it" in a closed group, according to Javier Alonso, the security minister for the province of Buenos Aires. At this stage, investigators had not yet determined the channel used to broadcast the footage, as reported by the daily Clarin.
