After a break of several weeks, Greenland's members of parliament returned to work in Nuuk on Monday, February 3. With two months to go before the next legislative elections, due to be held before April 6, the agenda of the Inatsisartut (the Greenlandic Parliament) should have been quickly dealt with. It has been turned upside down by threats from US President Donald Trump, who said he was ready to seize the autonomous Danish territory by force, and by the visit of his son, Donald Trump Jr, to Nuuk on January 7.

Fearing that the next elections would be taking place under foreign influence, Greenland's lawmakers were set to examine a bill under the fast-track procedure on Tuesday, February 4. Designed to tighten funding rules for the island's political parties, it has every chance of being adopted. They would no longer be allowed to accept foreign or anonymous contributions. In addition, no party would be allowed to receive more than 200,000 kronor (€27,000) from private donors, with a limit of 20,000 kronor per contributor.

The law is also intended to increase transparency. In the future, all contributions made by companies or organizations, as well as donation amounts, would have to appear in party accounts. For individuals, only donations of less than 1,000 kroner (currently 10,000 kroner) could remain confidential. The rules would apply not only to political parties, but also to their local branches and youth movements, as well as to individual candidates.
