Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on Monday, December 2, that street protests triggered by his decision to shelve Tbilisi's negotiations on joining the European Union would not spark a "revolution" in the Black Sea country.

"I remind everyone that there will be no revolution in Georgia," Kobakhidze told reporters as he accused the opposition of trying to stage a Ukraine-style pro-EU uprising funded from abroad.

He added that the country still aims to join the EU but ruled out talks with the opposition after his decision to shelve membership talks until 2028 prompted mass protests.

"I want to convince everyone that European integration is not postponed but will be pursued with maximum efforts," Kobakhidze said at a press conference after four straight days of pro-EU protests. He insisted he would hold "no negotiations" with the opposition.

Thousands of pro-EU protestors took to the streets of the Georgian capital Tbilisi on Monday for the fifth straight night of demonstrations against the government's postponement of EU accession talks until 2028.

Clashes have erupted in previous nights and Agence France-Presse reporters on Monday saw a strong police presence around the parliament building, where protestors gathered.
