Loud and confident, George Simion, the leader of the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR, far right), is confidently approaching the second round of the presidential election, scheduled for Sunday, May 18, in which he appears to be the front-runner. At 38, this nationalist leader and staunch supporter of Donald Trump dreams of forming a sovereignist alliance within the European Union (EU), notably with his other political role model, Italy's Giorgia Meloni, whom he visited in Rome on Wednesday.

"We have friends, we have allies, but most importantly, we have God!" said the message he later posted on Facebook to accompany the photo taken alongside Meloni. The day before, he was in Poland to support the PiS candidate for the presidency, Karol Nawrocki, sharing a campaign rally in the city of Zabrze. The first round of the presidential election in Poland will take place on Sunday at the same time as the second round in Romania. "Together, we will oppose illegal immigration and anti-American sentiments in Europe!" insisted Simion as he strode across the stage, wearing his usual white shirt. "You are our brothers!" he added to an enthusiastic audience.
