French Prime Minister François Bayrou submitted his resignation at the Elysée Palace on Tuesday, September 9, after Parliament ousted the government in a confidence vote.
After losing the vote he had requested on Monday by a wide margin (194 votes in favor, 364 against), Bayrou, who was appointed prime minister in December, has just handed in his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron. He will continue to handle day-to-day affairs until a successor is appointed, the fifth head of government since the start of Macron's second five-year term in 2022. Macron "will appoint a new prime minister in the coming days," the Elysée announced on Monday evening.
