The investigation into recent foreign interference operations that have aimed at sowing discord in French society has been making progress. A person based in Serbia coordinated both the splashing of green paint on the Shoah Memorial, three synagogues and a restaurant in Paris in May, and the disposal of nine pig heads in front of mosques throughout the Paris region on the night of September 8, Le Monde has learned. A French judicial source said that an arrest warrant had been issued for this person. The lead has strengthened suspicions of involvement by the Russian military intelligence agency, the GRU. That hypothesis has been further supported by intelligence shared through cooperation between France and allied countries.

Investigators have focused on the former Unit 29155 of the GRU, even though they do not yet have concrete evidence of Russia's involvement. The group, long tasked with sabotage and assassinations abroad, was absorbed in the early 2020s into the SSD unit, which is responsible for "special" activities. The service is headed by General Andrei Averianov, the former leader of Unit 29155.
