Venezuelan police arrested a journalist and her son on Sunday, August 25, in Caracas, the national press union said, as the country's post-election crisis continues following the disputed reelection of President Nicolas Maduro.

"National Police officers took away journalist" Carmela Longo "along with her son," the National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) said in a post on social media platform X, after having earlier reported a raid on her residence.

The SNTP said agents had seized "computer equipment" during the raid, and released a video that appeared to show Longo and her son entering a police vehicle.

The arrest of Longo – an entertainment journalist – is the seventh arrest of a reporter or editor since Venezuela's July 28 election, according to press union data. The police did not issue any official statement on the latest arrest.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Maduro the winner of the poll, but has not released data to support that conclusion.

The opposition claimed victory in the election, releasing polling-station-level data that it says show it won 67% of the vote.

Protests since the election have left 27 people dead – two of them members of the military – and almost 200 wounded, with more than 2,400 people arrested.

On Tuesday, Longo said she had been fired from the pro-government Últimas Noticias newspaper where she had worked for almost two decades.

The SNTP says dozens of state media workers have been fired for posting in favor of the opposition on social media platforms since the election.

Maduro accuses his rivals of using the networks to launch "hate campaigns" and earlier ordered the blocking of the X platform for 10 days.
