This is one industry that is not in a state of crisis. At a time when announcements of redundancy plans have become increasingly common in France, the cosmetics sector is teeming with new projects. New production sites are springing up from Troyes to Chartres and Vendôme (Loir-et-Cher department). Buoyed by the growth of the global market, estimated at €265 billion, and the export of "made in France" beauty care products, cosmetic brands are increasing their production capacities. "In ten years, exports of beauty products made in France have doubled. And in five years, despite the Covid-19 crisis, sales abroad of perfume bottles alone have doubled," noted Emmanuel Guichard, general manager of the French Federation of Beauty Companies (FEBEA).
According to Guichard, this surge is "helping the manufacturing base" in France, which accounts for around 30% of the cosmetics industry's 177,000 direct jobs. In early 2024, Febea listed some 20 projects under development, led by perfume and cream manufacturers and their subcontractors and suppliers of bottles, cartons, and other forms of packaging.
