The establishment was a familiar sight in the Thai landscape: a gas station belonging to PTT, the country's main fuel supplier, recognizable by its blue flame logo and its ever-present 24-hour 7-Eleven convenience store. On Thursday, July 24, late in the morning, the station, located in Thailand's Sisaket province, about 20 kilometers from the border with Cambodia, was struck by a rocket fired from the neighboring country. The projectile hit the convenience store, sparking a fire. According to local authorities, at least eight civilians were killed, including a child.

This attack came as part of a particularly violent surge in tensions along the 250-kilometer border between the Thai provinces of Surin and Ubon Ratchathani. Cambodian rockets struck 8 different locations on Thursday: a hospital parking lot that was evacuated before the impact, several villages, and even an evacuation center. In total, 15 Thai people were killed, 14 of whom were civilians. That same day, Bangkok retaliated by launching three rounds of air strikes with F-16 fighter jets on Cambodian military positions. Cambodia reported that one civilian had been killed, but did not specify if there had been any military casualties.
