GalleryStacy Kranitz, an American photographer born in 1974, covered the memorial ceremony for the ultraconservative activist on September 21 for Le Monde. She reflects on this spectacular event, which combined politics with religion.
Tens of thousands gathered on Sunday, September 21, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, near Phoenix, Arizona, to pay tribute to Charlie Kirk, leader of the organization Turning Point USA, who was assassinated on September 10. Orchestrated by President Donald Trump and his vice president, JD Vance, the event quickly turned into a political rally, revealing, according to American photographer Stacy Kranitz, "the way the Christian right has succeeded in infiltrating our government."
How did your arrival in Phoenix go, at the large Glendale stadium that had been requisitioned for Charlie Kirk's memorial?
I entered the stadium before the stadium seats were filled, just as they began letting everyone in. It took hours for the seats to fill, and by then, the first few hours felt like a megachurch service with people singing along to praise music. This is something I am very familiar with, living in the Bible belt of America.
