It's a phenomenon as mysterious as it is unexpected. In a very short time, the world's largest rodent has emerged from the anonymity of zoology textbooks to become a star on TikTok and Instagram, with some videos racking up several million views. There, the massive herbivore, reminiscent of a prehistoric hamster, can be seen peacefully grazing, cautiously stepping into water or basking in the sun with its peers. Not to mention that, thanks to artificial intelligence, internet users are using their imaginations to stage the star animal in improbable situations − massaging their bellies in a pool or climbing the steps of the Cannes Film Festival.
The Instagram account @Darkwingswildlife even allows fans to follow the adventures of Cheesecake and Pumpkin, two capybaras living on a farm in Florida. For $40, internet users can send a message – "You are the woman of my life" or "Happy birthday mom!" – delivered to the owners and filmed being munched on by the rodents, Cheesecake or Pumpkin. (Digestive and a little questionable.)
