On the evening of Thursday, June 12, Marco Rubio, who serves as both secretary of state and national security adviser to President Donald Trump, issued a brief statement in response to Israel's attack on Iran. It made no mention of any solidarity or support from Washington, despite the strong likelihood of retaliation by Tehran. Nor did it rescind its traditional support, but the top priority seemingly was to avoid any American casualties in the region, whether military or civilian.

"Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran," Rubio wrote. "We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region. Israel advised us that they believe this action was necessary for its self-defense. President Trump and the Administration have taken all necessary steps to protect our forces and remain in close contact with our regional partners. Let me be clear: Iran should not target US interests or personnel."
