The response was swift. Following the terrorist attack in Kashmir against Indian tourists, which left 26 dead on Tuesday, April 22, New Delhi announced a series of sanctions against Pakistan. The Indian government immediately suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty "until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism."

New Delhi is closing the Attari post in Punjab (opposite Wagah, Pakistan), the only land crossing between the two countries. On the diplomatic front, India has ordered Islamabad's defense attachés, considered persona non grata, to leave the territory within a week and will recall its own attachés from Pakistan. The Pakistani embassy staff is being reduced from 55 to 30 members. All visas granted to Pakistani nationals are canceled.

These measures were taken following a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security, the highest decision-making body on national security, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Earlier in the day, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh openly accused Pakistan and threatened: "We will not only target those who carried out the attack. We will also target those who planned this act in the shadows, on our soil." But, no evidence has yet been presented of Islamabad's involvement in the events, although the traditional support of the Pakistani army for Kashmiri rebels is well-known.
