Two wars have resumed in Israel, commanded by the same leader, Benjamin Netanyahu. The first is the real, bloody war in the Gaza Strip, following a ceasefire that had raised hopes of a lasting peace and the release of the last Israeli hostages held by Palestinian militias. With the brutal resumption of Israeli bombings, the Palestinian death toll surpassed the staggering figure of 50,000 on Sunday, March 23, without anyone really caring.

A political offensive against the Israeli rule of law has now been added to the clash of arms. It is embodied by the Israeli government's virulent attacks on the judiciary. There is nothing incidental about this coincidence. These two wars are the driving forces behind the ongoing transformation of the Israeli state, under the leadership of a prime minister whose unprecedented longevity allows him to claim authorship.

This mutation is illustrated by the presence in Israel on Tuesday, March 25, at the invitation of Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, of European far-right and illiberal parties at a conference on anti-Semitism. They include Jordan Bardella, president of France's far-right Rassemblement National. In February, Saar, who comes from Netanyahu's Likud party, already lifted a taboo by normalizing official contacts with the far right in France, Spain and Sweden, presenting the diasporas of the countries concerned with a fait accompli.

The no-confidence motion passed on March 23 by Israel's most right-wing ruling coalition against Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, who also acts as the government's legal adviser, is the first step in a procedure that should lead to an unprecedented dismissal. But this is part of a process that began long before the terrorist attack perpetrated by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
