2024 US presidential election: Try our swing state results simulator
In DepthSeven swing states will tip the US presidential election's outcome in favor of either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump. The other states, meanwhile, are already so polarized that they can no longer switch sides.
To elect President Joe Biden's successor, American citizens will nominate 538 electors across the country's 50 states. Some of these votes will invariably be won by one side or the other. However, in some strategic states, electors have shifted between voting for the Democrats and the Republicans (hence the name "swing states"). These states, therefore, play a crucial role in the election.
Since this summer, candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have been concentrating their efforts on these seven states: They need to secure 44 and 51 electoral college votes, respectively, in order to reach the 270 votes needed for a majority in the electoral college, and thus win the presidential election.
