According to the company’s official website, the goal of xAI is to “understand the true nature of the universe.” Participating in the creation of xAI are a number of engineers and researchers that have previously worked with companies such as DeepMind, OpenAI, and Google Research. Musk and his employees are set to share more information regarding the new company in a live Twitter Space on Friday.
Last March, the Tesla founder signed a petition calling for a six-month pause on AI technology so that regulation can be considered to address this fast-growing tech industry. Among the signees on the petition was xAI’s team advisor, Dan Hendrycks.
“AI research and development should be refocused on making today’s powerful, state-of-the-art systems more accurate, safe, interpretable, transparent, robust, aligned, trustworthy, and loyal,” the petition stated.
The announcement of xAI comes after several months of Musk publicly criticizing AI tech giants like ChatGPT’s Developer, OpenAI. While Musk was a co-creator of OpenAI, he has criticized the company’s chatbot for being “biased” when generating results for users.
“The danger of training AI to be woke – in other words, lie – is deadly,” Musk tweeted last December.
In the past, Musk expressed a desire to create his own AI technology called “TruthGPT.” In an interview with Tucker Carlson last April, Musk stated that he wanted to make “maximum truth-seeking AI.”
