A high school math teacher in Manchester, England has been found guilty of six charges of engaging in sexual activity with a child in Manchester crown court.
Rebecca Joynes, 30, was convicted by a jury on Friday for having sexual intercourse with two male students aged 15 and 16.
Joynes became impregnated by one of the students while on bail for allegedly having sex with another minor student. She gave birth in January and the baby has been living with the teen father.
She will be sentenced on July 4 and faces up to ten years in prison.
Judge Kate Cornell thanked the jurors and released Joynes on bail so she could spend time with her baby before she is sentenced to prison.
“There’s a baby in this case who has done nothing wrong and is entirely innocent of all wrongdoing and you will obviously want to see her before the sentence is passed, I do understand that,” said Judge Cornell. “But you must be under no illusion what’s going to happen on July 4.”
During the trial, Joynes told the jurors that she only had sex with the student who fathered her child after he turned sixteen. She denied having sex with the first student.
Joynes told the Manchester Crown Court jury that the first student was calling her "sexy" and acting "flirtatious" in class.
She took the student shopping and bought him a £345 Gucci belt. They went to her apartment and had sex. She denied they had sex, but investigators found the student’s DNA on her bedsheets.
Several days later, Joynes claimed she went to the second boy in a "panic" after learning from school officials that she was being investigated.
She was arrested and released on bail under condition that she not contact minors unless under supervision.
The student went over to her apartment after learning she had been fired and they had sex. Joynes and the student had a “toxic” relationship that lasted for some time.
“Rebecca Joynes is a sexual predator,” said Jane Wilson, senior crown prosecutor for CPS North West, according to The Times.
“Joynes was entrusted with the responsibility of teaching and safeguarding children. She abused her position to groom and ultimately sexually exploit schoolboys. Her behavior has had a lasting impact on them,” the prosecutor said. “I would like to thank the victims for supporting the prosecution. Joynes will now face the consequences of her actions.”
