The World Health Organization on Wednesday announced that the first laboratory-confirmed human case of an avian influenza strain has killed a human in Mexico.
The organization said that the 59-year-old died on April 24 after developing nausea, shortness of breath, diarrhea, and general discomfort, according to Reuters. The case is the first laboratory-confirmed human case of bird flu A (H5N2) reported globally, and the first H5 virus infection in a human to be reported in Mexico.
The WHO said that the victim had no history of exposure to poultry or other animals. The person reportedly had underlying medical conditions and had been bedridden for weeks prior to the onset of symptoms.
