Cypress Hill to play with orchestra nearly 30 years after The Simpsons predicted it

Cypress Hill have made a 28-year-old gag from The Simpsons into a reality.

The American rap act appeared in a 1996 episode in which the drug-influenced group bizarrely requested to play with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Decades after the joke first aired, Cypress Hill have announced that they will be playing with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall.

The prophetic joke in The Simpsons is one of a number of gags from the series which have become reality.

Cypress Hill star B-Real explained that the joke had in fact given the band the ambition, telling the BBC:  “It’s been something that we’ve talked about for many years since The Simpsons episode first aired.”

“So it’s very special for us. And it’s coming off the heels of our 30th anniversary for our Black Sunday album.”

In the 1996 episode Homerpalooza, Homer Simpson becomes an act in a freak show which tours with various music acts, in an effort to appear cool to his children.

At one festival, one act has booked the entire London Symphony Orchestra. Backstage, technicians suggest it was Cypress Hill – “possibly while high”.

After Cypress Hill discuss the issue, apparently unable to remember, they decide that they had requested the ensemble and they are later seen playing together.

Cypress Hill achieved mainstream success in the 90’s with their song Insane in the Brain, and many of their tracks focus on the use of cannabis.

The London Symphony Orchestra has acknowledged the cartoon origins of their planned concerts with Cypress Hill, stating online: “Nearly 30 years after The Simpsons famously predicted it, Cypress Hill are finally set to share a stage with the London Symphony Orchestra, performing hits from the hip-hop collective’s extensive back catalogue and their revered album Black Sunday.”

Cypress Hill have reportedly extended an invitation to the Royal Albert Hall concert to guitarist Peter Frampton, who also appears – continually exasperated – in the prophetic episode of The Simpsons.
