A suspected drink-driver has been arrested after a car veered off a bridge and blocked a railway line, causing travel chaos for commuters in Greater Manchester.
Police said a man in his 30s was driving the vehicle when it veered off a bridge and landed on its roof after a collision near Salford in the early hours of Friday morning.
The car was a black BMW 3-series. No other vehicles were involved in the incident, which happened on the Regent Road roundabout.
The crash caused “major disruption” to commuters, which was expected to last until the end of the day, National Rail said. All trains were stopped on what is one of the North West’s busiest routes.
Commuters heading from Merseyside to Manchester city centre were affected, as were services to Wigan North Western. Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales services were all impacted, National Rail said.
