Buc-ee's is expected to open in Mebane by early 2027, WXII reports. It will be the first location in North Carolina.
Mebane Mayor Ed Hooks said activity will be increasing at the mega site starting in February after final engineering drawings for a state Department of Transportation roadway project and the layout of Buc-ee's were finalized back in November.
Buc-ee's will be on a 34-acre site along Trollingwood Hawfields Road near Interstate 40 and Interstate 85.
The state's plan to accommodate the mega store includes widening Trollingwood-Hawfields Road and extending exits and entrances on Interstate 40.
The project must be completed before Buc-ee's construction can start. Work will take 18 months to complete.
Last year, WRAL's 5 on Your Side traveled to the nearest Buc-ee's, which is in Florence, South Carolina. County leaders said us the mega-sized store has brought in "generous tax revenue" to the area, but traffic has been an issue.
"That was one of the biggest reasons for citizens against it," Hooks said previously.
Buc-ee's is known for its hot food bars serving brisket sandwiches, salads, chicken and more, its clean bathrooms and its large retail shop. It has been called the Disney World of gas stations.
