U.S. — Spirit Airlines flight attendants have begun advertising that in the event of a water landing, passengers will have the option of purchasing a lifejacket for $39.99.

Passengers will always be able to purchase a lifejacket before take-off. While lifejackets may be bought after the plane crashes into the water, the price will rise to $99.99, and purchase will be subject to availability.

"We call it the 'I Don't Wanna Drown' add-on package," said Spirit Airlines CEO Bill Masterson. "Passengers can now pay for the comfort of knowing that if the plane crash lands in a lake, they won't die a horrible, watery death. It's just another way we are revolutionizing air travel here at Spirit."

According to sources, passengers have found the change to create an interesting question at the intersection of fear and probability. "It really makes you consider your mortality in a unique way," said passenger Lisa Thompson. "Obviously the odds of a water landing are low. Do you accept the very small risk of drowning to save the forty bucks? These are fascinating scenarios to present to passengers before they fly."

At publishing time, Spirit had announced passengers could also pay $55.99 for the option to have oxygen in the event the cabin loses pressure.
