KYOTO, JAPAN — Nintendo of Japan announced Monday that the next mainline entry in the bestselling Super Mario series will just be a an animated GIF of Mario saying "Wahoo!" and will retail for $2,500.
"Nintendo has done it again!" video game journalist Geoff Keighley said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
According to legendary game designer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto, he got the idea for Super Mario GIF after looking at memes and GIFs online one day. "I just woke up one day and thought, 'what if Mario was a GIF?' Then, we drew from my inspiration to make this exciting new game," he said while bowing respectfully.
Nintendo of America president Bob Nintendo said, "I thought it was a stupid idea, but fans pretty much buy our crap no matter what. Let's rake in that cash, baby!"
The new title, which cuts back dramatically on production costs, has a near 100% profit margin because there's nothing for programmers to code, and they didn't have to pay for voice actors. "Honestly, I made it in ten seconds on my phone," Miyamoto said. "There's virtually no overhead."
Super Mario GIF will release on November 23 in America, ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
